Transferring a UK domain name is simpler than most business owners expect. Unlike generic top-level domains that use auth codes, .uk domains use IPS tags — short identifiers that tell Nominet which registrar manages your name.

What is an IPS tag?

An IPS tag (Internet Provider Security tag) is a unique label assigned to every Nominet-accredited registrar. When you change your domain's tag at your current provider, Nominet routes management of the domain to the new registrar within 24–48 hours.

At Domain Renewals, our tag is CGC-HOSTING. You'll enter this at your existing registrar when initiating a transfer to us.

Step-by-step transfer process

1. Check your domain — Use our domain search or renewal tool to confirm the domain status and whether a transfer is required.
2. Create an account — Register with Domain Renewals so we can link the domain to your ledger once the transfer completes.
3. Choose a hosting package — Add any package (parking from £10/yr qualifies) and your first year of renewal is free.
4. Update your IPS tag — Log in to your current registrar's control panel and change the tag to CGC-HOSTING.
5. Wait for confirmation — Nominet typically completes tag changes within one to two working days. We'll email you when your domain is active on our tag.

Common registrar instructions

Most UK registrars place IPS tag settings under "Domain settings", "Transfer out", or "Tag change". If you cannot find the option, contact your current provider's support — they are obliged to release your domain on request.

Free year one with any package

When you transfer to Domain Renewals and add any hosting package — domain parking, holding page, web hosting, or auction listing — we waive the domain fee for year one. Years two onwards are charged at standard TLD rates.
